Yorkville Resturant

feel like royalty at this warm Yorkville destination
By Kristen Brown

Warm greetings, ambient jazz and exposed brick illuminated by black and white films and candlelight welcome you out of the cold and into the warm and style that is MODO.

Located at 122 Avenue Rd., MODO sets the standard of what a Yorkville dining experience should be like.

With valet parking at the door and a friendly hostess to check your coat upon arrival, you know right away youre in good hands. MODOs old meets new theme means rich hardwood floors, imported furniture and modern accents that take you through the restaurant.  The main bar is flanked with the buildings original large wooden beams.

The Goof:

Garden Gate Restaurant

They're heading--in droves--to "The Goof's"
by Judi McLeod

The first time a friend suggested we "do lunch over at the Goofs", I was a tad wary. "The Goofs" is the fond nickname dubbed to the Garden Gate Restaurant by patrons, some of who have been going there since 1952. Somewhere in time, the `d in their "Good Food" logo went missing from a large outside sign. The nickname stuck long after the logo was repaired.

Garden Gate Restaurant at 2379 Queen St. E. (at Beech Ave.) lives up to its promise of "Good Food".

The Garden Gate Restaurant, which has daily lineups beginning with its 8 a.m. opening, needs no advertising.

Tesoro of Washington:

"Truly" An Italian Treasure

By Judi McLeod

One of the highlights of trips to Washington is dining at Tesoro, aptly translated to, "an Italian treasure".

Tesoro is located at 4400 Connecticut Ave. N.W., directly next door to the Days Inn where Canada Free Press staffers stay on trips to the capitol and right across the street from Don Irvine and other friends at Accuracy in Media (AIM).

Great restaurants in Washington are as prolific as city buildings with interesting architecture, but Tesoro is the kind of place that can count on bringing you back.

When friends want to celebrate something special and tell you, "I know this great little Italian restaurant", they must be thinking of Tesoro in Washington, D.C.

The bar is cozy, the ambience relaxing and in clement weather, the little patio out front always beckons.

Aunt Bee's in Cochranton Pa. :

Feeds tummy and soul

By Judi McLeod

It was like coming in to your favourite auntie's own cozy kitchen from the howling winds of winter. And just to think we almost missed it. Having missed the last exit driving back to Toronto from Washington, a puckish Canada Free Press gang decided to stop at the very next place they saw.

Off of 1-79 in Pennsylvania, there was a little restaurant called Aunt Bee's. We knew we'd come to the right place when Associate Editor Arthur Weinreb spotted that homemade peach pie, banana cream and coconut cream pie were just some of the goodies served from the kitchen.

Indeed, everything, including office manager Dan Carrier's hamburger, is homemade at Aunt Bee's.

It was a scene straight out of a 1950s movie. Down to earth grub, down to earth patrons, comforting, cozy and loaded with a kind of indelible charm. The kind of place where truck drivers warm ham-sized hands over steaming mugs of coffee. Blowing in with the wind were other travelers of the road, coming in from the cold, a little bewildered but hoping for the best.

Donatello Restaurant

A cut above the crowd

Now Open at 37 Elm St.

by Pamela Bloom

Donatello
Nestled in the heart of downtown Toronto, Donatello is the perfect place for a business lunch, a party, or a romantic dinner for two. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with fresh flowers on every table, gentle music playing in the background, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff. The elegant décor is highlighted by the lovely furnishings and stunning marbleized walls.

Owned and operated by  head chef Giacomo Rauti and his wife Filomena, Donatello has been  a fixture  on Elm St. since 1993. Conveniently located just steps away from The Delta Chelsea Hotel, and a short walk from either College or Dundas subway stations, their Northern Italian cuisine is conveniently located for all to enjoy.

For the first course, my guest ordered the Grilled Calamari and I chose the Shrimps With Perno Sauce. The calamari was served on a bed of salad with an extra virgin olive oil and garlic sauce, and it was accompanied by the most scrumptious roasted peppers I have ever tasted.  The calamari was grilled to perfection, tender  and delicious.

Balkan Bistro:

Home of Turkish cuisine

by Judi McLeod

When crocuses and snowdrops cropped up this Spring, they paved the way for the opening of Torontos new Balkan Bistro.

Located at 126E McCaul Street, Balkan Bistro is right across the street from the famous St. Patricks Cathedral.

With windows overlooking busy McCaul Street, the Balkan Bistro is a treasure of a little restaurant and one of the few places where you can find Turkish coffee just the way it should be served, strong, sweet and served up in demi tasse.

The smell of home baked cookies waft from the bistro beckoning tourists and locals alike.

The Balkan Bistro is one of those little cafes whose dedicated chef takes pride in unusual entrees that include Kadinbudu Kofte, a traditional Turkish meal, made up of lightly fried ground beef and rice meatball in a soft shell of beaten eggs.

The Homemade Chicken Parmesan, fresh chicken breast cooked in the chefs special Parmesan sauce, topped with mushrooms and freshly grated Parmesan packs them in at lunchtime.
